DENVER CITY -- The Tigers handled Denver City in much the same way they have handled most district opponents this year -- quickly and efficiently.
The Tigers (17-3, 7-0) maintained their top spot in District 3-3A, reeling off seven runs in the third inning to keep the Mustangs winless in district with a 14-4, six-inning win.
Lico Castillo earned his first victory of the year, pitching four innings and giving up two hits while striking out two.
Ty Collier pitched the final two innings, recording three strikeouts.
Four Tigers had a multiple-hit game, with Blake Grimmett leading the way from the leadoff spot with a 4-for-5 afternoon, while Bradley Price was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Eric Martinez hit two doubles, Marcus Rodriguez slapped a pair of singles, and Hadley Hirt and Isaac Ramon collected a base knock each.
Snyder head coach Charles Bollinger said the atmosphere contributed to a slow start offensively for the Tigers, with more Snyder fans in attendance than Denver City fans, but said the defense and pitching were right from the start.
“Lico threw well -- he had good movement on his pitches -- and our defense played well,” Bollinger said. “We started slow, but we did a good job adjusting to the slow pitching.”
The Tigers stayed a game up on Sweetwater, which edged Seminole, 7-6. In the other district contest, Merkel capitalized on seven Lamesa errors to win, 10-0, in five innings.
Snyder clinched a playoff spot with the Seminole loss.
The Tigers travel to Merkel Tuesday with the start time to be determined. The teams swapped home dates after rain washed out Merkel’s field on April 2. The Tigers won the first meeting, 9-7.
