There is a new version of an old mail scam and Snyder police wants to make sure residents don’t fall victim to it.
According to Police Sgt. David Holley, some Snyder residents have gotten letters telling the recipients they have won a prize but must pay a fee in order to get it.
“Some of the offers come on a post card, others like a letter and some come looking like an official document, like a bond certificate,” Holley said.
Snyder police have found four different company names associated with the suspected scam thus far.
The names are Nation al Document Center, ALM, U.S. International Official Government Payouts and Merchandise Headquarters.
“All of the letters also use the words ‘respond immediately, and all of them ask for credit card numbers and a signature,” Holley said.
He also said that three of the four letters list the same return address in New York. “These operations get a post office box and use them a short time and when the law gets close they move on to a new box.”
People who send in money or credit information are always disappointed.
“If they do send you something it usually of no value,” Holley said.
Some of the best advise is the old adage, ‘If it looks too good to be true, it usually is’, according to Holley. “You shouldn’t have to pay anything if you’ve won something.
