Texas College men’s team won the Frank Phillips rodeo over the weekend, but did not earn enough points to climb out of fourth place in the region.
“The men need to keep plugging away and make up some ground,” coach Greg Rhodes said. “We’ve got some individuals sitting good in region.”
Tate Stratton fourth-place ride in the short round to give him second in the average for the rodeo, while Clay Bunney finished fourth in the average after a sixth-place ride in the championship round.
The women’s team tightened its grip on second place with a second-place showing at Borger.
Sabrina Lay won both the short go and the average in barrel racing to maintain her lead in the Southwest Region, while Jamee Roach won the final go in breakaway roping with a time of 2.7 seconds, giving her second in average for the rodeo.
“Both teams looked good,” Rhodes said. “The women got a little distance and have a good chance of taking second in the region. We just have to finish out the schedule the way we performed in this rodeo.”
The men’s team trails West Texas A&M, Tarleton State and Texas Tech in the standings, while the women trail TSU.
The teams have two rodeos left on the schedule, beginning Thursday with a trip to Big Spring for the Howard College Rodeo.
WTC will close out the rodeo schedule with a trip to Stephenville April 22-24 for the TSU Rodeo.
