Western Texas College earned its first series split of the season after taking the back end of Saturday’s doubleheader with Odessa on the eight-run rule, 15-7.
The Westerners (12-32, 6-20) got a huge day from Landon Thompson, who went 6-for-6 with four RBIs and two steals. Thompson had 12 hits on the weekend, and raised his batting average 41 points by the end of the four-game set, according to head coach Billy Hefflinger.
“Thompson had an unbelievable weekend,” he said. “He has just been on fire.”
Cody Guzman got his second victory of the year, and the team got a single, double and a triple from Chase Gilbert in the finale.
It was the first time WTC has won on the mercy rule in a conference game.
WTC fell in the first game, 12-7, despite two hits each from Matt Meredith and Rafe Martinez.
“We really needed to win all four, but I’m happy with the split,” Hefflinger said.
The Westerners can avoid a play-in for a berth in the conference tournament if they win five of their next six -- all against Midland JC -- and El Paso sweeps Odessa. If not, the team will play New Mexico Military Institute, the last place team in the north division of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.
Odessa leads WTC by three games, and has not beaten El Paso in four tries this year. The Westerners are 0-2 against Midland this year.
The team begins a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today at Midland, then closes out the regular season with a four-game set against Midland at home beginning with a noon doubleheader Friday.
Tuesday’s scheduled game at Lubbock Christian has been cancelled.
