Western Texas College split its first two games with Odessa College Friday, with Snyder graduate Logan Hill earning his first college win in the opener.

Hill went six innings and struck out five batters in the 6-2 victory.

“Logan threw great and we finally scored some runs for him,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “It’s his first college win, but he’s pitched good enough all year that he could have had it long before now.”

Hill was aided by a solo home run from Chase Gilbert and four stolen bases from Landon Thompson, who went 2-for-4.

Derek Davis also had two hits and stole a base, and Eric Brown added a single and a steal.

Thompson and David hit back-to-back homers to start the nightcap, helping WTC stake a 4-0 first-inning lead in the second game, before Odessa responded with seven in the top of the second, taking advantage of several defensive miscues and connecting for a grand slam off starter Tyler Trout.

“That second inning was the worst defense we’ve played all year,” Hefflinger said. “That happens, but we couldn’t afford it (Friday).”

WTC battled back to trail 8-7 in the final inning, before Odessa connected for another grand slam in the final inning to finalize the 15-7 victory.

WTC was scheduled to play Odessa in a doubleheader at noon at the WTC Complex, with Troy Krugar getting the start in the opener.

“I told the guys we need a complete day, not just a complete game,” Hefflinger said. “If we don’t sweep (Saturday) it’s going to be hard to catch them. I’m confident we can do it, we just have to put them away.”
