The Ira boys track and field team won the District 9 track meet Thursday, dominating the meet and sending competitors in a host of events to the area meet next week.
“It’s the first time we’ve won a district championship in track,” coach Toby Goodwin said. “Everybody did a great job.”
The top four in each event will proceed to the area track and field meet Thursday at Highland.
Jake Barnes claimed the gold in the discus and the shot put. He recorded a heave of 48-7.5 feet in the shot and had a throw of 124-2 in the discus. Both distances bested the next closest competitor by two feet.
Ira also grabbed the gold in the 4x100 relay, with Jess Wall, Bryan Proctor, Wes Kellner and Bryson Higgins crossing the line in 45.29.
The mile relay team of Devin Gutierrez, Corbin Clements, Wall and Proctor also took first with a time of 3:44.59 -- a full four minutes better than the second place team from Rule.
Kellner earned gold in the 400 dash with a time of 55.13, while Bryson Higgins won the silver in the 100 dash (11.17) and the 200 (23.47). Higgins and Abel Monato of Rule raced to a photo finish, with Monato edging Higgins by .01 seconds after reviewing the film.
Proctor made the area meet with fourth place finishes in the high jump (5-6) and the 300 hurdles (45.30).
Kevin Graves ea rned an invitation to area in discus, finishing third with a distance of 116-3.
Kellner’s leap of 39-6 in the triple jump earned him fifth place, but he will participate in the event at area because the second place finisher from Rule will not attend the area meet.
The 4x200 relay team also earned an area berth with a third-place finish.
For the girls, Lindsey Wilson qualified for area in two events.
Wilson earned the silver in the high jump with a leap of 5-0, and set a personal record in winning the silver in the long jump with a distance of 16-.25.
The top four qualifiers from the area meet will advance to the regional meet, with the top two in region moving on to state.
