The Snyder Tigers will send competitors from three divisions to the regional tennis meet, with top seeds Tanner Reed and Andra Dunham winning the district and the boys doubles team of Matt Hale and Jospeh Ynguanzo advancing as the second seed after winning a playback Wednesday.

Dunham cruised past Jessica Carson of Sweetwater in the finals, 6-2, 6-1. The pair was tied 2-2 in the first set before Dunham took charge of the match.

Carson will be the second seed from District 3-3A.

Dunham reached the finals after besting Sweetwater’s Rebecca Long, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals in a match where Dunham admitted she did not have her best game.

“It’s good to win a tough match when you’re not playing you’re best,” she said of her semifinal match. She said winning the district would help her seeding at the regional tournament.

“It all comes down to region. There are going to be six or seven really tough girls there,” she said.

Reed blew past the competition in taking the district title, losing just three games in three matches.

After dispatching Sweetwater’s Robbie Strzelec in the semis, 6-0, 6-1, Reed zipped through Sweetwater’s Ivan Ramirez, 6-1, 6-1, in the finals.

Ramirez won the playback and earned the second spot in regional out of the district.

Reed beat Jeffrey Lee of Lamesa, 6-0, 6-0, in his first match.

Head tennis coach Ted Phillips said Reed and Dunham were the prohibitive favorites going into the tournament.

“They took care of business,” he said. “They both played like champions. Both should be in the top four in region. We’ve played the top folks in the region, so we know it will be tough.”

The boys doubles team of Hale and Ynguanzo also will represent Snyder in the regional tournament after winning their playback match.

Hale and Ynguanzo fell to the team of A.J. Arteaga and Kelsey Matchen from Sweetwater, 2-6, 4-6, in the finals.

Hale and Ynguanzo stopped Andrew Villalva and John Klassen of Seminole, 6-4, 6-1, in the playback match to pick up the second seed in district.

“They’ve been working hard for four years, and they came close last year,” Phillips said. “I’m proud for them.”

The other boys doubles team from Snyder -- Wesley Price and Kenny Alcala, made it to the second round after blanking Guenther-Elliot from Merkel, 6-0, 6-0, before being upended by Villalva and Klassen.

Girls doubles partners Jacy Beccue and Mattie Phillips topped Guerra-Garcia from Seminole in the second round, 6-0, 6-0. They finished the tournament in fourth.

Nikki Timora and Kallie Wesson were bounced in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.

Austin Lyle also placed fourth in district. He topped Salas Garcia of Lamesa, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, before falling to Strzelec in the third-place contest.

Annie Martinez beat Lauren Stewart of Lamesa, 6-0, 6-4, in the second round. She dropped the third place match to Long.

For the JV team, Will Banks was second in boys singles, while Matthew Kerr was fourth. Erica Munoz was fourth in girls singles.

Terry McGough and Gabe Aguilar were third in boys doubles, and Lindsey Small and Desirae Guerra were third in girls doubles. Teammates Tara Kubena and Kayla Hartzog were fourth in that division.

The regional qualifiers will head to Odessa for the tournament April 21-22 at the Ratliff Tennis Courts, a newer site with better surfaces than Odessa College, where the tournament was held last year.

“They are nice courts,” Phillips said. “The kids are excited to play there.”
