The Snyder girls seized control of the District 3-3A golf tournament Wednesday, knocking 29 strokes off their first-round total with a 312 to move ahead of Sweetwater by five shots.
Snyder is sitting at 653 after besting Sweetwater by 24 strokes in the second round. Sweetwater recorded a 326 for a two-round total of 658.
“We really played good at Merkel. We knew we had dug ourselves into a hole after the first round and we responded in a great way,” head golf coach Ricky Hunter said.
The junior varsity team carded a 382 to remain in fourth place in district.
Cami Trout maintained her position as second medalist, firing a 74 to stay eight shots back of Brittany Mercer of Sweetwater.
Christi Williams shot a 78, 10 shots better than her first-round total, and Brooke Jackson shaved nine strokes off her first-round score with a 79.
Ashley Luecke bettered her first-round by two shots with an 84, and Shannon Mangis was nine shots better with an 81.
The improvements in the second round give Snyder the opportunity to repeat as district champions.
“We have one round left and it should be really exciting,” Hunter said. “We are just glad that we were able to put ourselves in this position.”
The JV girls bettered their first-round team score by 26 strokes.
Heather Derington paced the junior Lady Tigers with an 82, April Boyd carded a 95, Kaylee Lacik stroked a99 and Chelsea Hackford shaved 26 strokes off her first-round card with a 106.
The girls close out the district tournament Wednesday at Seminole.
