Kairos Prison Ministry, a continuing three-day weekend event held every six months at the Price Daniel Unit, was held last week in Snyder. Volunteers continue to meet with the inmates weekly in prayer and share groups.

Prison Ministries requires a unit advisory council for each State Prison Unit at which this ministry is being conducted. The Price Daniel United council is chaired by Steven Reames of San Angelo. Snyder members include Vic Jeters, John Hollingsworth, Zola Schlegel, Dale Nolan, Claudia Sanchez, Robert Kornegay, Dorothy Petersen and Tom Martin. Others are from San Angelo, Sweetwater and Sterling City.

Kairos is in 36 of 100 units in Texas.

It is an inter-domination lay-led ministry to bring Jesus Christ to the incarcerated and build a Christian community in the prison.

Introductory three-day weekend retreats are held twice per year in the prisons with 42 inmates invited based on selection by the warden and chaplain of the unit.

The retreat program is patterned after the Cursillo, Des Tres, and Walk to Emmaus, a short course in Christianity. Following the retreat weekend, the inmates join a community of prison residents that have attended a previous Kairos weekend. This community meets on weekends, with volunteer support to pray and share as they strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ.

A church or volunteer involvement includes men working on the inside team, women as outside angel, and young adults and children making agape materials for the weekend.

In addition, hundreds of dozens of cookies must be baked and taken into the unit to give each inmate.

Prayer times are chosen so the inmates and team members can be lifted in prayer throughout the entire retreat weekend.

The Price Daniel Unit in Snyder began Thursday with 54 team members from Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, Sweetwater, Sterling City, Paint Rock, Seminole, Colorado City, Big Spring, McCamey, Roscoe, Cameron, Hermleigh, Hilltop Lakes, Snyder and Lovington, N.M.
