Western Texas College concluded the WTC rodeo Saturday night, getting a pair of first-place rides in the short round in front of a spirited crowd at Scurry County Coliseum.

“It was a great rodeo. I really appreciate the support from everyone,” head coach Greg Rhodes said.

The rodeo drew a large turnout both Friday and Saturday, and Rhodes said the audience was especially enthusiastic.

“It was a very energized rodeo,” he said. “The crowd really got into it. We capped it off with some great bull rides to end on a high note. It was a pretty good show.”

The men took fourth, with conference leader West Texas A&M winning the rodeo. Tarleton State University was second.

Clay Bunney won the short round in the bareback riding event, earning a score of 78 to push him into second for average in the rodeo.

Jake Marshall earned third in the average in bareback after a 74 in the short round.

Cody Horwedel had a fourth-place ride in the short round in saddle bronc with a 72. Hadley Hunting was third in the average in that event.

Bull rider Trent Cormier also claimed the top spot in the championship go, scoring an 86 to also vault him to the runner-up spot in the average in his competition.

While they did not place, Rhodes singled out bull riders Jared Farley (77) and Lane Nixon (72), each of whom had a solid ride.

Horwedel and Reg Cully paired up for second in team roping in the final round with a 10.3. They also were second in the average.

“I’m really proud of our men’s team,” Rhodes said. “We’ve got quite a few men goo d enough to be on the team, it’s just a matter of being able to pick the ones that will do good that week. I’ve got to figure that out, and once I do, we’ll be in good shape. We’ve got some good cowboys.”

The women’s team finished fifth. TSU won the women’s division and South Plains College was second.

Sabrina Lay had the lone short-round ride, completing the barrel circuit in 13.82 for second in the short go. She was fourth in the average.
