Four Western Texas College riders and ropers sit in first place in their respective events after the opening round of the Western Texas College Rodeo.
Julie Jones used a time of 13.93 to hold the top spot in barrel racing, while Jennifer Weeding had a blistering time of 2.7 in the breakaway roping competition to grab the lead.
Bruno Paoiella and his partner lead team roping after the first round with a time of 6.9 seconds.
Trent Cormier led three WTC bull riders who delivered top-five performances Thursday, taking the top spot with a 77.
Jared Farley sits in third with a 74, while Lane Nixon is fifth with a 70.
“We did a good job, and now we’ll wait and see how the rest of the weekend goes,” WTC rodeo coach Greg Rhodes said. “As far as our part goes, we made some nice runs and had good rides.”
Jones and Erin Anglin are tied for fourth in goat-tying with an 8.4, and Cody Horwedel sits in third place in saddle bronc with a 72.
Sam Spreadborough and James Irish were sixth and 10th, respectively in saddle bronc.
C.R. Moore is sixth in calf roping, Marcie Wienke is third in breakaway roping with a 3.0, followed closely by teammate Jaymee Roach who is fourth with a 3.3.
The men’s team is trying to rebound from an 80-point, fourth-place finish at the Odessa rodeo. The women were second at Odessa.
Several hands will make their debut performances when the second-round begins at 7 tonight, including Tate Stratton, currently third in the conference in bull riding.
