The Lady Dusters split a midday doubleheader with El Paso Wednesday, taking the finale, 7-6 after falling 3-1 in the first game.

Patricia Gonzales went the distance in the opener, allowing two earned runs.

The Dusters (22-23, 9-13) had the bases loaded with no out in the first inning and failed to score.

Head coach Rodney McNeill said his team lacked urgency in the first game, and was surprised at the lethargy with so much on the line.

“We played with no heart or energy,” he said. We have an unbelievable shot at the conference tournament, but for some reason we were dead in that first game. We played with a lot more energy in the second game. ”

The Dusters jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game, and held on to a 7-6 win in a game in which they never trailed.

Eryn Kearbey got the start, and was relieved by Amber House. Gonzales pitched the final two innings for the save.

McNeill said Kearbey pitched well before running into trouble with free passes.

The Dusters were slated for another doubleheader at 2 p.m. today against El Paso (25-18, 12-10), and McNeill said the team needed to close out the series with a sweep of the Tejanas, who sit in thrid place in the conference, three games ahead of WTC.

“There’s no doubt we are the better team, and if we win three at home, it makes it easier on the road,” he said. “(El Paso) played with a lot of heart, and the team that wants it more will win. We should be able to beat them if we come out and play.”
